Water Safety & Safe Swimming Information
Dear Bridgehampton Families,
The safety and well-being of our students extends beyond the school day. As part of New York State’s water safety education requirements, we are sharing important information and resources with families regarding drowning prevention, water safety, and safe and healthy swimming.
As you continue to enjoy pools, beaches, bays, and other waterways, please keep these important safety reminders in mind:
Always swim with someone else and keep an eye on one another.
Closely supervise children around water. Young children should always remain within arm’s reach, even in shallow water. Lifeguards and life jackets do not replace close adult supervision.
Choose safe swimming areas. Public beaches and pools with lifeguards are the safest places to swim.
Pay attention to weather conditions and never swim during storms or lightning.
Wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket when boating. Water wings and other air-filled swimming aids should not be used as a substitute for an approved life jacket.
Know the signs of drowning and be prepared to respond. Drowning can happen quickly and silently. Learning basic swimming skills, CPR, rescue breathing, and first aid can help save a life.
We encourage all families to review the attached New York State Department of Health “Safe Swimming: Tips for Everyone” resource for additional information about keeping children and adults safe around water.

Thank you for helping us keep our students and families safe in and around the water.
